The tree of life: We Are All Connected

Picture
This pendant is a phylogenetic tree, symbolic of the belief that we are all evolutionary cousins. The design, by Luk Cox and Idoya Lahortiga of Somersault 18:24, is reproduced in silver using 3D printing technology.

Somersault 18:24 is a Belgium based company bridging the gap between visual arts and science. Visit their Facebook page here and their website here.

Idoya, Luk and I met on Facebook through common interests. When they began producing jewelry, we saw potential for collaboration. The phylogenetic tree design was a perfect starting place; intrigued with the design itself, I am drawn to the symbolism as well.

To incorporate micro-mosaics (adding color and pattern to the silver pendant,) I first fabricated a sterling silver frame and had more of them cast in sterling silver.

Three pendants in one: by leaving the pieces separate, they can be worn individually or all together.

In our biodiverse world, why settle on one design? We offer five designs with the phylogenetic tree: inspired by blue jay feathers, hosta leaves, goldfish scales, dark matter, and butterfly wings--take your pick and wear your passion for science.
