How the Light Gets In

How the Light Gets In

On Inauguration Day, I woke up feeling....energized. I put on my robe and my string of pearls, and shuffled to the kitchen for coffee, preparing for the ceremony to come. I felt connected to so many of you. I had received notes and messages from several who had commissioned or bought dissent collars, saying you were wearing them that day. We were connected by so many threads: rejoicing in the strength of women, a compassionate new President Joe Biden, and Kamala Harris, a Woman of Color, taking her place as Vice President of the United States of America...the Dark Ages of the past four years coming to a close.

Listening to Jennifer Lopez singing Woody Guthrie's song "This Land is Your Land" brought me to tears, Amanda Gorman's poetry brought us to our feet...countless moments of art, inspiration, aspiration, and humanity.  While the celebrations continued, I was inspired to get to work. I kept my pearls on, added my overalls, and decided that I would go on instinct and  make something new. I wanted to celebrate, I wanted to shatter some glass, I wanted to play with pearls and pulverize some sky blue lapis.

A friend celebrating her birthday on Jan 20th decided to buy the necklace, while saying she had an idea for birthday earrings. She sent me a drawing and we talked on the phone, caught up on life, discussed these earrings and how much hope and love we have for America. The earrings commemorate the date, a palindrome, and based on Leonard Cohen's 'Anthem'... I feel honored to once again be a catalyst for your creativity. (And I love these earrings so much, I am making myself a pair!) xoxox

The birds they sang
At the break of day
Start again
I heard them say
Don't dwell on what has passed away
Or what is yet to be
Ah, the wars they will be fought again
The holy dove, she will be caught again
Bought and sold, and bought again
The dove is never free
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in
We asked for signs
The signs were sent
The birth betrayed
The marriage spent
Yeah, and the widowhood
Of every government
Signs for all to see
I can't run no more
With that lawless crowd
While the killers in high places
Say their prayers out loud
But they've summoned, they've summoned up
A thundercloud
They're going to hear from me
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in
You can add up the parts
But you won't have the sum
You can strike up the march
There is no drum
Every heart, every heart
To love will come
But like a refugee
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in
That's how the light gets in
That's how the light gets in
