An Interstitial Artist

An Interstitial Artist

Interstitial art is any work of art whose basic nature falls between, rather than within, the familiar boundaries of accepted genres or media, thus making the work difficult to categorize or describe within a single artistic discipline.
In fact, my life has been an interstitial odyssey in many ways, so I resonate with this title; I am a bridge, a connection, I fill the spaces in between. In the past 17 years I've developed language to explain my work, my process, my medium. You may see some of my works here on my blog, and still are not sure what it is I "do". I make micro-mosaics--different from ancient micromosaics--not exactly mosaic and not strictly limited to jewelry. I am a goldsmith, a weaver, and a painter, and sometimes I combine all these. Calling myself an interstitial artist validates that I make connections where they didn't previously exist. I make work that does not fall into simple categories. My work is also interstitial in the way that I am often commissioned to create something from your life, a creative narration from heart, to hands, to life.

I have often said it is a joy to be able to commemorate special events for you. This latest example was a "blind" collaboration...a surprise gift for the man who penned this poem. His wife knows he appreciates my art as I have worked with him on gifts for her. I enjoyed a chance to work on something for him, having our previous conversations to draw from.

We decided to incorporate his poem into a framed micro-mosaic. The poem is inscribed onto a piece of marble, the overall size is just under 8" square in the frame.
